Building a new generation of food justice activists and leaders — inspired and equipped to work together to create an equitable, sustainable approach to food.

Empowering Teens

Through our unique Teens for Food Justice model, volunteers work together to build and manage hydroponic farms that grow food for families in underserved, food desert communities. They also get the training, skills and confidence to help others improve their nutrition, fitness, and wellness and empower those at greatest risk to advocate for their own health. Volunteers learn and serve together in a hands-on entrepreneurial environment, gaining the collaborative, critical-thinking skills needed by tomorrow’s leaders and developing an ongoing commitment to lasting social change.

Feeding Communities

Teens for Food Justice was launched in September 2013 at New Beginnings Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. At New Beginnings, a team of teen volunteers from schools and neighborhoods throughout our city (with the help of partner organization NY Sun Works) have come together to build and maintain a classroom hydroponic farm that is a source of fresh produce, a living environmental science lab for the school’s K-7 students, and a health and nutrition hub for families.

The teens are also trained to lead nutrition and fitness workshops and help teach healthy cooking and eating and affordable shopping skills to children and adults. The volunteers spend a year together as health and sustainability ambassadors in the communities they serve, empowering those at-risk to take charge of their own health and learning to be leaders for positive social change.

I wanted to end my day by saying thank you to the Universe (and my dad:)). Thank you for the roof over my head and the food on my table. I was with a lot of people today that did not have these two things. I feel blessed that I was able to be a part of helping fill their tummies at the Laugh Factory. The owner Jamie Masada serves hundreds of homeless people every Thanksgiving and it is truly a gift! Thank you for letting me be a part of it. Happy Thanksgiving!

We are excited to announce our 20th Anniversary Bonus Session…

BIG BIG NEWS!
To commemorate our 20th Anniversary, Tom and Jax Arnold: Kids Helping Kids have stepped up to celebrate this milestone in the best way imaginable – ANOTHER SESSION OF CAMP!

This is a one-time only, summer 2015, opportunity.

This new session will be specifically for NEW campers who have never had the opportunity to go to camp before! This session will take place August 24-August 27, 2015 at our regular campsite on Catalina Island.

What does this mean? It means up to 100 new campers now have an opportunity to attend Camp del Corazon!! It means we can extend this life-changing experience to up to 100 new deserving children. It means….we need your help.

We need to raise $50,000 to make this happen. The Arnold Family and their Foundation, Jax Arnold: Kids Helping Kids have already pledged their support, as they want nothing more for Camp del Corazon than to extend this amazing opportunity to more deserving children.

Will you help?

Octavia’s Mission for Forgotten Children

$13,465 RAISED of a $10,000 GOAL

We have completed our first fundraiser for “The Forgotten Children”. Not only did we reach our goal we went over it! Octavia will be traveling to Belarus to work one on one with these beautiful kids who have been affected by Chernobyl.

Her goal on this mission is to not only bring love, attention, care, and nurturing while she is there, but to also work with them developmentally to help them become higher functioning. The group she works most with is the high-risk/high dependency unit that is bed-bound, and often “tied” to their beds. While she is there, she watches over the unit 24 hours a day. She has also intervened to stop abuse. Octavia attends every feeding, and actually feeds them herself (three times a day). She changes diapers, administers meds, massages them, talks to them, assesses their developmental needs and PLAY’S with them. She plays music so they have something to hear besides the cries of other children who are in pain. Her goal on this trip is to work one on one with the nurses and caregivers and try to help them understand a better way to interact with these precious children. “We have to change the mindset of the people who work with these kids day-in and day-out as that is when their quality of care will significantly improve”.

THANK YOU to all that donated. Our family, friends, board members, OTB supporters and all of our new anonymous friends for your generosity. Thank you to all those who helped spread the word and bring awareness to these Forgotten Children of Chernobyl. I want to give a special thank you to Octavia for being the voice of these children. We are forever grateful for you for helping kids help kids.
